the wind is not always the enemy...
last weekend while shooting cactus and assorted flora at ruth bancroft gardens in walnut creek, ca...the day was brisk but not terribly cold, a bit overcast with occasional sprinkles. as the afternoon progressed the wind picked up; more a breeze at first but becoming ever more insistent as time progressed. at the time i was trying to shoot some relatively small flowers. i thought for sure the shots had been foiled by the wind and would more than likely be tossed when i sat down to review.
normally i don't cull immediately after shooting; memories are often too fresh and i like to get a little distance between the actual event and the visual representation captured in a photograph. i downloaded all the cards that evening and let the memories fade. when i did sit down to cull, i noticed that while the compositions i was going for were indeed "gone with the wind" as it were, they had been replaced with some pleasant surprises.
these shots came as pleasing reminders that abstraction, insinuation and the fleeting glimpse provided by bokeh and motion are, when communicating a message, just as competent in their understated power as infinite depth of field and tack sharp. a subtle aide-mémoire that i have a great fondness for abstractions, the simple beauty of colors, and fundamentally captivating nature of shape; which, of late, seems to have been all but forgotten.
the muse simply exhaled as i watched, frustrated; only later did i understood...
i really like the whimsical nature of this image. at first i was thinking "pink lady" but, decided that actually, it seems as though the flower is sticking its tongue out at the camera in a playful, taunting manner. it made me smile.
hope you enjoy this series of desktop background wallpapers.

Productive desktop a little bit tweaked

Productive desktop, netbook edition
In order to get this desktop I got inspiration in the minimalist Desktop, found here lifehacker.com/5280484/the-minimalist-os-x-desktop, and mixed it with the ideas of the layered desktop found here lifehacker.com/399021/layered-desktop-wallpaper-organizes.... The wallpaper is 1024 x 600 because I use it on my lenovo S10 with mac os X. Actually the layers extended to the dashboard too as you can see in the next image.
Date, hour, icalevents and taskpapers todos were added with geektool, icalbuddy and the little trick of rename my todo.taskpaper to todo.txt - don´t worry, taskpaper will continue to open it —, which, instead of using the geektool file option, I exhibit with the unix cat command in order to get it updated regularly. The Dock was placed on the right thanks to tinkertool.

Ok, so I'm a minimalist desktop kind of guy, except for the dock of course.
Things you might notice:
* I have no icons on the desktop itself. I hate icons on my desktop. I have an extra folder in my dock (ƒ, it's the padlock on red icon) that I dump things in before sorting properly. Ultimately no icons on my desktop means my life is in order.
* My notification area is full of stuff.
* My chat client (the most excellent Adium) is full of "real names". I rename anybody I add to my contact list to their real name (if I know it). My brain likes to think of people by their name as much as possible.
* I still have custom icons for many things in my dock.
* I get quite passionate about my working environment. My work desktop is quite like the physical desk, lots of stuff on it to reflect the myriad of things I've been working on lately.

How do I get this onto my iPhone?
There are a number of ways to do this, however I think the easiest and fastest way is to download Flickr’s free app. Within the Flickr app you surf over to my photo feed to view the images (if you make me a contact then I’ll appear in the flickr contact list). When you find one you like, just click the download button and save the image directly to your phone. Quick & Simple!
I don’t have an iPhone. Can I still use it on my phone?
As of this writing this image (960 x 640) should be large enough to be used as wallpaper with the Droid / Android, BlackBerry, Windows 7, and iPhone.
How did you make it?
This background was made using graphic design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Filter Forge, Genetica, Wacom, Alien Skin, Topaz Labs, as well as several other programs.
